Earthship Field Study
Academy Step 2
Once students complete their Academy in person, or online, we encourage them to go further into their studies by participating in hands-on practice:
The Field Study is a 3 weeks long program of work on Earthship construction sites, where it is necessary to assist the crew.
The exact content of the work varies from session to session. Work hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. This work is labor intensive, but we are happy to work around any physical issues you may have. We encourage people of all backgrounds to participate.
There are no classes during the Field Studies, these are strictly building sessions.
The Field Studies are the perfect opportunity to solidify the skills acquired during the Academy and there are no limits on how many you can attend. Some students choose to attend one field study, when some people prefer to participate in three or five until they feel confident to move towards their Independent Study.

- SPECIAL GROUND UP BUILD SESSION in KANSAS, September 14th to October 9th
2026 COST:
Field Studies are $ 600 USD (+ taxes) for Academy Students and $ 900 USD (+ taxes) for anyone else
Housing on campus NOT included.
To book your spot, we will send you an invoice for a tuition deposit of $ 200 USD, then the rest of the participation fee will need to be paid upon arrival.
Please note that like all our other programs, the fee is non refundable, but can be used as credit for up to two years.
ACCOMMODATIONS for Field Studies at our headquarters:
Students have the option to purchase housing on campus. Please note that there are no laundry facilities on these sites.
- The single room is $ 200 USD per week
- The double room with private bathroom is $ 300 USD per week.
We recommend the Earthship accommodations as your stay in these “primitive Earthship” units is considered to be part of your education in understanding the Earthship concept. They are not meant to impress you in terms of comforts, rather they are meant to educate you on what must be learned in order to build and live in Earthships.
A $100 cleaning deposit is required for check-in to any Intern housing. This money must be in the form of cash or check and will be collected at Orientation. This money will be returned to you upon your departure pending the cleanliness of your space. If you need to leave before the scheduled check-out, your deposit will be returned to you via US mail or PayPal.
We are unable to accommodate early check-ins or late check-outs.

This Field Study will last 4 weeks instead of 3, but the price will remain the same. This experience will allow you to see an Earthship built from the ground up, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of the entire building process. You will be working on a single construction site with the Earthship crew, giving you the opportunity to witness nearly every phase of home building.
This is the latest Earthship model, recognized for being the most economical, as well as fire and tornado resistant, while also being self-sufficient.
Regarding accommodations, there is a wonderful campsite near a lake, just 15 minutes from the build, which we can offer you at an affordable price of $50 USD for the entire 4 weeks. We truly hope you can join us for this incredible opportunity; it promises to be a fantastic experience.
