‘Kinship’ emerged out of a desire to create a positive legacy from the wreck of Black Saturday.
The building is constructed from second hand and redundant object upcycled materials, and is solar passive, and uses no fuel or energy for space heating or cooling (and performs at a 20+ star rating).
When complete, it will be off grid for electricity (solar, wind, geothermal), process all grey and black waste, collect and store rainwater, grow food (inside and out) and be fire and flood resistant.
- Location: Kinglake, VIC 3763
- Housing Type: Standalone House
- Project Type: Global Model Earthship Inspired Build
- Builder: owner-builder
- Designer: Biotecture
Despite the fire damage, we managed to salvage most of the significant infrastructure from our much loved two bedroom muddy.
Our ‘mudship’ rebuild is part ‘biotecture’ retrofit of our original home and part construction of a two bedroom Global Model Earthship-inspired new dwelling.
Through a series of workshops almost 200 people have been involved, in some way, in the rebuild. The building wouldn’t have been possible without their collective generosity and shared creativity.
A big shout out and thank you to Ian, Sam, Dani, Sean, Jamie, Duncan, Damien, Brett, Maggie, Angel and Carlos, in particular, for sterling efforts and stellar contributions.
The long-term goal is to create a convivial space for community-based bioculture and permaculture education, and a sanctuary for human and animal trauma and mental health recovery and healing.
