Internships

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE REGISTERING

The Earthship Intern Program is a 3 week long hands-on learning experience at the Earthship global headquarters in Taos, New Mexico.  Interns learn Earthship design concepts and building techniques with the best Earthship builders in the world, in the original Earthship community,.  Each session offers 4 classroom presentations as well as a tour of various community Earthships.

The Earthship Intern Program is open to anyone over the age of 21 with an interest in sustainability and a willingness to work hard.

WORK
Interns work on Earthship construction sites with the Earthship crew learning building concepts, designs, systems and techniques.  The exact content of the work varies from session to session.  Work hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.  This work is labor intensive, but we are happy to work around any physical issues you may have.  No prior building experience is necessary and we encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to participate.

During each session, Interns spend one day in our Visitor’s Center guiding guests through an Earthship, answering general questions.  This is a public facility paid for by the County of Taos and a wonderful learning opportunity for Interns and visitors alike.

Class room presentations offered include Earthship principles and designs, Earthship history and evolution, power systems and water systems.

Please note this Internship is not a complete course in how to build an Earthship.  If that is your interest, see www.earthship.com/academy.  If you are interested in participating in a ‘start to finish’ build or in humanitarian builds in locations outside of Taos, please see www.earthship.com/currentprojects

ACCOMMODATIONS
Interns live in hostel-style dormitories on Earthship compounds and/or in Simple Survival buildings.  These dormitories range from pre-Earthship buildings to our latest designs.  All have been built by Michael Reynolds and are a part of the Earthship development and culture.  Room rates vary from $450 - $800 for shared, private or double occupancy private rooms.  Each compound offers fully stocked kitchens, beds, bathrooms, common space and wi-fi.  We do not provide bedding, towels or food.  There are no laundry facilities on these sites.

A $100 cleaning deposit is required for check-in to any Intern housing.  This money must be in the form of cash or check and will be collected at Orientation.  This money will be returned to you upon your departure pending the cleanliness of your space.

We are unable to accommodate early check-ins or late check-outs.

ABOUT THE AREA
Taos, New Mexico is a high desert with an extreme climate.  Temperatures can vary from 100 plus degrees in the summer to 30 degrees below zero in the winter.  The elevation is 6,950 feet above sea level which can cause temperature variations of 40 degrees in a matter of minutes.

Taos is seated at the foot of the Sange de Cristo Mountains and is famous for it’s fine art, great food and majestic beauty.  Taos Ski Valley is known as one of the best in the country and the Taos Pueblo contains the oldest stand alone dwelling in the United States.  During the summer, Taos offers a multitude of outdoor activities including river rafting, mountain climbing and hiking.  Natural hot springs dot the Rio Grande river and are not far from the Earthship community.

TRANSPORTATION & LOCAL LODGING
There is no public transportation in Taos which makes being here without a vehicle difficult.  The Earthship compounds, job sites and town (food shopping, laundry facilities, gas, etc.) are spread out and driving is a must.  If you choose to participate without a vehicle, you will be dependent upon your fellow Interns for rides.

The closest airport is in Albuquerque, NM (3 hour drive to Taos).  The only shuttle service to Taos is Twin Hearts Shuttle - 575-751-1201.  Reservations need to be made in advance.  One month prior to each session, Interns receive a list of fellow participants and their email addresses so that they may coordinate ride sharing, etc.

Orientation and check-in to the housing begins at 10:00 am on the first morning of each Intern session.  This means you will most likely need to be in Taos the night before.  We are unable to accept early check-ins and therefore recommend the Abominable Snow Mansion Hostel in Arroyo Seco:  www.snowmansion.com  as an inexpensive option.

Check-out is at 4:00 pm on the last day of each Intern session.  If you need to leave early, your cleaning deposit will be mailed to you upon the cleanliness of your space.

  • More on the Earthship Biotecture Intern Program: The EB intern program is aimed at both sharing what we have learned in forty years in the trenches of the green movement and looking for possible recruits to help us. We are in effect building an earth army. It is working. No revolution has ever been beautifully organized. They are all “down and dirty”, “shoot from the hip” kind of operations.

About Earthship Biotecture

Earthship construction drawings are designed to meet standard building code requirements so you can get a permit no matter where you are. Earthship Biotecture is beyond LEED Architecture. Earthships are green buildings that meet standard building codes. EarthshipBiotecture is based on the work of principal architect, Michael Reynolds. (see: media resume)
