Visit from Fort Lewis College Ecology and Society Field School

Testimonials

Thanks so much for helping to coordinate the Fort Lewis College Ecology and Society Field School visit last week.  It was truly the highlight of our summer course, the students were so thrilled to experience the Earthship community.  You have created an amazing facility for learning, working, living, and we were so glad to be a small part of it for a few days.
All the best in your summer endeavors, and hopefully we'll cross paths again!

Testimonials

"I rented an Earthship in the Greater World Community for a night - it was awesome. It was 90 degrees outside and totally cool inside. It felt great to charge my cellphone on solar power and know that the waste water from the sink went to feed the banana tree in the bedroom!"

May 7, Earthship to planet earth, we have liftoff

Check out the Reports from the Field

Our two weeks are over and in ours and a number of others wake lies an impressive tire towering behemoth, thrown together with our hands, hard work, collective will to do something, and volunteering spirit.

The majority of the workforce was volunteer and though the bulk of the work was probably done by the crew, the volunteers are imperative to timely success.  I had a fantastic time, working my body like crazy, talking to other people who are interested in similiar things, breathing fresh air every day, waking to song from a bird I don’t know but now love, and having my skin peeled off by the blistering 60 mph breezes of Wyoming.

United States Policy Report: Michael Reynolds: Earthships

green buildingsBy Amanda Spake

Amanda Spake is a Washington, D.C.-based writer whose articles on health, science, education, and the environment have appeared in U.S. News and World Report, The Nation, and the Washington Post, among other publications.

Michael Reynolds — rebel, environmentalist, visionary — has spent the last 40 years challenging the architectural establishment and local zoning codes to build “off-grid” houses that require little or no energy to construct and produce no greenhouse gases. Reynolds calls them “Earthships.” They are self-sustaining structures that make maximum use of renewable resources — sun, wind, rain, and snow — for heat, cooling, light, collecting and pumping water, treating sewage, even growing food in indoor greenhouses. Thanks to partnerships with individuals and with municipal and national governments, about 2,000 Earthships are in use around the world today.

Our Future

I'm so overwhelmed right now. My heart is leaping out of my chest and Jeff and I feel as though God is speaking to both of us SO clearly. We are on the exact same page and it all just kind of feels like a dream.

Big Elk Pyramid
Our Future
May 01 2010 13:04:00
May 1st! Today is the day, ready or not, to start our earthship pyramid. We are laying a tire foundation and making blocks out of papercrete. The first thing we need to do is make sure we align one side to 'true north'.

Our project is a little different than most in that we are two women in our mid-fifties, building it ourselves without the help of large machinery or contractors.

We built our home in a similar fashion (it is nearly complete).

The pyramid is exciting in that it is a structure that requires no framing and no roof! It can be built with only two different forms. A corner and a side. The bottom layer consists of 4 corners and 24 sides. We are in the process of setting up a 'block factory' in our driveway!

So, wish us luck. You can follow us at www.BigElkPyramid.com.

Congratulations and good luck with everything, I'll have to admit I am envious. That is exactly how I want to live my life, simple and self sustaining, I dream of the day when my Eship is complete and lived in, I also plan on having chickens, goats as well as a few pigs. you never now when this world is going to slip into some sort of catastrophe and people won't be able to feed themselves or have adequate means to survive, I feel like all those worries will be lifted off of me when I complete my Eship. I will help as many people I can that want to change to this type of lifestyle.
