It is home to the historic Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge and Taos Ski Valley. It is a beautiful and majestic place that encourages people to reconnect with what is authentic. The weather in Taos can reach over 100 degrees in the summer and 30 Please be sure to bring a good sun hat and LOTS of sunscreen! At this high altitude, the sun is unforgiving. Please also bring rain gear you can work in and be prepared for snow during sessions 1 and 4. Between the extreme weather conditions and the high altitude, it is vital that you drink a lot of water. During your time at the Academy this Fall, you will complete one unit of Field Studies, Biotecture Introductory Studies and all of the Classroom: Pragmatic and Classroom: Philosophy Studies. To graduate from the Earthship Academy you will need to complete one more unit of Field Studies (one month on a start-to-finish Earthship build) and your Independent Study. Academy students will receive first notice of start-to-finish Earthship build opportunities to fulfill their second unit of Field Studies. We will provide guidance for proposing your Independent Study. Please note you must obtain written approval of your proposal from Academy Staff to receive credit for your Independent Study. Definitions of Field Studies and Independent Study are below.
You will each have the opportunity to work on at least three different hands-on projects during your session:
*A new Earthship located directly behind our Earthship Visitor Center.
*Experimental pre-Earthship “pods” with Simple Survival systems,
*The world’s first Sustainable Development Testing Site (EVE).
We are tracking your credits and will provide you with a transcript at the end of the session.
FIELD STUDIES
Field 1, Field 2
Field studies involve hands-on participation in an Earthship build and are offered in conjunction with Earthship builds in Taos, New Mexico and around the world. Two one-month long field studies must be completed to satisfy this requirement.
The purpose of these studies is to give hands-on building experience with Biotecture techniques and to expose students to the mental and physical environment of a Biotecture construction site and a Biotecture life.
Students will learn how to build a sustainable, independent Earthship from the ground up.
FIELD 1: One month
At least one month of field study must take place on a start-to-finish Earthship Biotecture build.
FIELD 2: One month
To be completed during your 2 month session in Taos this Fall.
INDEPENDENT STUDY
The Independent Study may take place anywhere in the world. Examples of Independent Studies include: launching a demonstration project, staging and facilitating a relief project, designing a CAD model of an Earthship development, mapping Pockets of Freedom, facilitating legal breakthroughs in permitting and more. Students may propose their Independent Study after they complete all other courses. Independent Studies are the students choice but must receive written approval from Academy Staff and are subject to review to qualify for credit.

Q & A: Michael Reynolds Earthship Architect
What are your hopes for the future of Earthships?
It started off as individual homes, now we have two or three communities going. I hope to see in my lifetime to see towns and cities built this way. If you're a huge developer and you want to build a small town you have to put in millions of dollars of infrastructure before you begin.
One Man’s Trash. . .
Soon after Mike Reynolds graduated from architecture school in 1969, he disregarded much of what he had been taught and began a 30-year practice of building “earthships”—off-the-grid dwellings built from what the rest of society deems garbage (discarded cans, bottles, and tires, among other items). His radical and unusual structures have received resistance from zoning and code legislations, spurring a continuing struggle to change the building permit process.
EARTHSHIP BIOTECTURE SANCTIONED EVENTS
Steps/requirements for becoming an Earthship Agent and/or hosting an Earthship sanctioned event or build.
1. Graduate from the Earthship Academy.
graduation requirements and info may be found here: http://earthship.com/school
2. Propose your event or build to Earthship Biotecture.
3. Negotiate a percentage of revenue to be shared with Earthship Biotecture.
(this is largely to compensate EB for time spent to digest information on the event and post on the EB website as we are getting a large number of these requests)
GENERAL
* All events and builds will be under guidelines of EB
* All promotion/marketing materials will be under guidelines of EB
OBJECTIVE
To spread/share the Earthship concept around the world and to preserve the integrity and safety of Earthships that are built while supporting the mother company, Earthship Biotecture.
Sanctioned events will be promoted and supported by EB and the EB website.
If someone encounters an event or "workshop" that doesn't appear on the EB website they are strongly encouraged to call EB for info.
Non sanctioned events will not be supported in any way and in some cases will
be announced as “non sanctioned” for the protection of the integrity of the Earthship
concept and mother company.
