WAM ABU DHABI: Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research on Sunday attended discussions on the "Garbage Warrior", the epic story of U.S Earthship eco architect and documentarian Michael Reynolds, and his fight to build off-the-grid self-sufficient communities, following the screening of the film at the Zayed University Old campus auditorium.

Renegade architect Michael Reynolds and his green disciples have devoted their time to advancing the art of "Earthship Biotecture" - passive, solar, off-the-grid, sustainable housing.

March Earthship Presentations
by Ms. Anne Tempel

The presentation will include a slideshow of pictures and projects that Earthship Biotecture has collected from various builds all over the world, including basic principles of an Earthship home (6 concepts – solar/wind electricity, thermal mass heating and cooling, water catchment and the recycling of water within the building, food production, self-contained sewage, and the use of recycled materials as building materials).

Creating beauty and shelter from trash

Written by

Innovative architects and companies are turning discarded items such as bottles, tires and jeans into earth-friendly building materials. And the results are anything but ugly.

By Leah L. Culler of MSN Real Estate

Can you build a house from beer cans? That's the question that inspired Michael Reynolds to start constructing homes from trash in 1969.

More than 40 years later, his "Earthship" home design is used all over the world — and it's just one example of how designers are reusing materials to build homes. An Earthship is a self-sustaining home that requires little heating or cooling and generates its own electricity and water. Earthships use readily available waste materials, including used tires and glass bottles. But it all started with beer cans — and a couple of journalists. (Bing: What do "Earthship" homes look like?)

Freney says he first came across this concept after reading Earthship founder Mike Reynolds’ books in 2007, prompting him to travel to New Mexico in 2008 for a month-long internship with Earthship Biotecture.

“A year later Mike Reynolds was due to speak at the State of Design festival in Melbourne about bush fire-resistant dwellings and how the Earthship could be good for rebuilding in areas like Kinglake,” Freney said.

May the seed you put in people's head grow as much as you inspire people , I have built a house on my own with mud and bottles and cans and other recycled materials and I am really concern about what I could do better for our mother earth Pachamama.

Thanks for her, thanks for what you've done in Haiti.

When Political figures realize that their stature can be greatly enhanced by designating the sustenance of the individual people paramount.

The economy, the corporations and other institutions will be placed in their rightful positions behind the needs of the people.

LOUISA, Va.

Having hundreds of old tires piled up around your house usually isn't a look your neighbors appreciate.

But the tire piles around Randy Holladay's dwelling in Louisa in Central Virginia aren't just discarded junk -- they're the walls of his home and most of them aren't visible from the outside.
