It's my plan as well, just a ways down the line. I have the property, I want to work on understanding aquaponics better before I start building though, so I can make the building host the system really well. I have some initial designs done in solidworks, and have been purchasing equipment to start up my first aquaponics system. I'll have it up and running early this year, and hopefully understand it pretty well by spring 2013 when I want to start building my earthship!

I mean aquaponics, not hydroponics... Check it out... It's pretty freakin sweet. You can create close to a self sustaining loop of fish, plants, and fish food... It's really cool.
Yup. I got my terms crossed.

I am currently attending earthship academy in taos, planning on building a simple survival model back home in TN starting in May.
My plan is to use the space allotted for toilet and septic instead for a tilapia tank that will re-cycle through the botanical cells.

let's do collaborate

I am reading up on raising food rabbits in my Earthship. Feeding them scraps from growing vegetables, probably with some supplemental bought feed, and using their pellets for composting. No big investment in more room and solar power for an aquaponic system, and no noise and mess of chickens.
I had been very interested in the aquaponics, even though it meant a $10K addition and $3k for the system. I wanted my favorite "easy catch" catfish that ate the redworms from my gardens. But then I got gout and eating catfish is now off my menu.
