    I Want One

    earthshipsRead this. Understand this.
Then you will be ready to determine your floor plan, your building site location, construction drawings, permits, etc.

This information is designed to provide the information necessary for people to secure the type of sustainable housing that will soon be a necessity. We cover concepts relative to today's current way of thinking and ways in which we will we have to think in the future as a species in order to survive on this planet. We must evolve.

Michael Reynolds is a world famous architect who has spent the last forty plus years evolving the concept of home as well as the home itself. His vision is for the home to care for the inhabitants and not vice versa. With this logical goal in mind he set out to design and refine the Earthship. After forty years it is now an affordable reality. Designed with concepts that any person can adopt, these buildings can provide housing for the people.

During this evolution of the building concept other ideas arose. Why is this so important for humanity? How can we make this improve a persons existence? And finally how do we make it so everyone can have one especially in third world countries where the functionality of these buildings would save lives.

In short it is not only about building it is about humanity and its needs.

    Who we are:
The Earthship Biotecture Academy offers extensive training in Earthship design principles, construction methods and philosophy. Academy classes, labs, tours and hands-on construction techniques are led by Michael Reynolds and a staff of top Earthship builders, electricians, plumbers and plant specialists. We are building an Earthship Army and the Academy offers education for those who are excited to learn and live the Earthship philosophy and help expand it globally.

    Who you are:
The Academy has trained over 1305 students from around the world. Students come from diverse backgrounds, many are architects, municipal planners, artists, teachers, industrial designers, professional builders, community and environmental activists. Applicants must be self-reliant and prepared to work in an intense group environment and take care of themselves physically, financially and emotionally.

    Graduation from the Academy:
There is no time limit on completing the path to graduation. Some students pursue their degrees in Earthship Biotecture aggressively, others are content with the knowledge they gain during their Academy Session and do not strive to graduate. Some students both graduates and non-graduates have been hired here at our headquarters or on individual out-of-town and out-of-country Earthship builds.

    Graduation Requirements:
TAOS ACADEMY SESSIONS: Complete an Academy Session in Taos or a Global Session (95% attendance in the classroom and participation in hands-on work as well as a passing grade on the Final Exam are required).

FIELD STUDIES: Students receive credit towards this requirement by participating in an official Earthship Biotecture Field Studies project. Field Studies opportunities are intended to help further students’ knowledge of hands-on building techniques by inviting them to work alongside the Earthship Crew on a new build.  They are usually offered 2 to 3 times a year in the US and internationally.  Projects range in duration from 2-8 weeks.  There are two types of Field Studies offered:  client builds, which have no fees involved and humanitarian builds, which have fees that go directly towards materials and nominal wages for EB staff leading the build.  For either type of Field Studies, students are responsible for their own transportation, food and lodging.

INDEPENDENT STUDY: The Independent Study may take place anywhere in the world and may be concrete (launching a demonstration project in China, staging and facilitating a relief project in Haiti) or digital (designing a CAD model of an Earthship city in Turkey, mapping Pockets of Freedom in Australia). Students may propose their Independent Study after they complete the Academy Session and Field Studies requirements. Independent Studies must receive written approval from Academy Staff and are subject to review to qualify for credit.

    Taos Academy Sessions
    Tuition $2,500
The curriculum for each session is identical and consists of classes, labs, hands-on construction and tours of many Earthship and pre-Earthship buildings. You only need to attend one of the sessions.

Sessions are intensive and are six days a week for four weeks. Half the time is spent in the classroom and half learning hands-on techniques on the construction sites.

    The Owner/Builder Earthship Experience

The Labs give students a chance to go in-depth with technical aspects of the Earthship systems. With guidance from our Plumbing Specialist, students build a Water Organizing Module and learn about all filters, pumps and valves. Students also do hands-on basic electrical wiring for lights and switches. During the Earthship Maintenance Lab students learn all aspects of caring for an Earthship building from servicing the batteries for the solar system to cleaning out the grease and particle unit of the gray water system.

Students participate in guided tours of at least 20 different Earthships and pre-Earthship experimental buildings. These tours showcase a variety of Earthship types: Packaged, Modular, Custom, Global and Simple Survival. On many of the visits, the residents of the Earthship are present to answer questions about their homes including modifications they have made and how they have made their lifestyle fit their building.

The Earthship Academy is based at the Greater World Earthship Community which is the world's largest sustainable, approved subdivision and home to the world's first Sustainable Development Testing Site. Classes are held at the Academy Classroom which is housed in a modular Earthship at the entrance to the community. Hands-on building takes place within the community, on the the Test Site and at other locations in the Taos area. One site for 2016 hands-on will be an Earthship for a local family whose home was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.

    Optional Housing

Optional housing is available during your session through the Earthship Academy at a few locations in the area. We select your location for you but you may choose a shared room, private room or double occupancy private room. Prices range from $450 - $800 for the duration of your session. Should you choose to camp or find your own housing, we can provide a list of recommendations. Please note camping is not available on the campus itself. Also, if you are planning on finding your own housing outside of what we offer we strongly advise having a car as Taos is quite spread out and there is no public transportation.

EARTHSHIP GRAND CENTRAL is providing links to all Earthship Biotecture activities around the world.

The original true “Earthship” is a “machine” developed by Michael Reynolds. It is the result of forty- five years of research and development into the biology and physics of this planet as they relate to housing vessels that are designed to sustain human life here on earth a while longer.

The word “Earthship” is fast becoming synonymous with sustainable off grid housing all over the world and is being used as such in many efforts and attempts at sustainable housing. We are happy with this as it helps to point people in the direction of thinking that we think is appropriate for the future.

There are hundreds of Earthship enthusiasts (some of them are Earthship interns, apprentices and academy graduates) out in the world at this point. They have worked with Earthship Biotecture, studied, helped and gotten inspired. They are like an army of people wanting to make the world a better place. They are making efforts and attempts at pursuing the Earthship concepts around the world. Some of these efforts and attempts have been successful and some have been near disasters. Nevertheless, they are moving people into thinking in the right direction for us to have a future. Some of these efforts are worth recognizing as Earthship places of interest around the world. They are represented by orange flags on the global map below. This illustrates Earthship type activity and thinking around the world.

Actual Earthship Biotecture builds, events and academy sessions run by original and seasoned Earthship staff are represented by the green flags.

      The Mission.

To build stronger, more resilient and economic structures in a place where natural disasters are likely to strike again, and to give people the power and education to build/help themselves and the ability to help others.
To provide an off-grid alternative that is far less risky and less dangerous should future disasters occur.
To feed the hunger for change and provide alternatives to those in need.

      Questions to jeane@earthship.com / 575-613-4899

Earthship Biotecture joined by a team of local, national and international volunteers has built what we call the “Windship” Earthship design in the Philippines. The Windship has evolved from the Simple Survival Earthship design and functions to serve as an aerodynamic storm shelter and school building for a community outside of Tacloban in Leyte Island. There has been much interest by government officials in the replication of the Windship throughout the Philippines in the future which will help to create typhoon resistant, multifunctional use community buildings.

Partnering with the Earth Village Project and One Block for Batug, Earthship is ready to launch a second hit in order to complete the structure's finishes and to install the power and water systems.  We are also looking to simultaneously building a zero-cost hut in the community made solely from salvaged, local and recycled materials.

We are in the process of raising money to help balance our budgeted costs of the first round as well as raising the money for materials for the finish hit of the Windship. To join this project as a volunteer, the contribution fee is $1,000 USD which all goes toward funding the project and materials needed.

      Six Nations Build

Earthship Biotecture in collaboration with Biotecture Planet Earth is wanting to build an off-grid, self-sustained home for a family living on Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, a First Nations Reservation in Canada, between 18 to 31 July of 2016.

This particular family, headed by Flower, is in desperate need of a healthier and more cost effective shelter, as they have been living in a condemned trailer for years. The trailer has several holes where you can see straight through to the outside, a rodent infestation, mold, old brass pipes that get clogged constantly, next to no insulation, and a leaking roof. Flower supports her daughter, who is a single mother, and 4 grandchildren, aged 4, 8, 11 and 15. She is their only family.

      We need to raise $70,000
      for this project through
      donations and sponsorships.

      Please consider making any
      contribution you can.

Location: Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, Canada

      Dates: 18-31 July 2016

To participate in this Biotecture Planet Earth / Earthship Biotecture workshop please make a minimum donation of USD $1,000 and email your details and payment confirmation to info@biotectureplanetearth.com

The project will be led by Michael Reynolds and an experienced Earthship crew. We will be building Michael Reynolds’ newest design, the “Wood Simple Survival Earthship”, a low-concrete building that is easy to replicate, and that integrates all Earthship principles (comfortable shelter though thermal mass, rainwater catchment and storage, solar electricity, food production, building with recyclable and natural materials and a contained sewage treatment system).

An important part of this project will be the knowledge transfer that the team will be providing to members of the Six Nations community that will be participating in the build to acquire the skills to then be able to replicate the building in the future.

This project will be a workshop open to participants from all over the world who would like to learn how to build using Earthship techniques from Michael Reynolds and his experienced crew while at the same time supporting Flower and her project. The project will be funded through this workshop. The workshop participation fee will be a minimum donation of USD $1,000 and this money will go straight back into the production and materials needed to make this project happen.

Only 15 spots are available and this project will count towards Earthship Academy certification.

We also need to raise an additional USD $20,000 for this project through donations.  Please consider making any contribution you can: https://chuffed.org/project/sixnations

THANK YOU for your support and making their project happen!

  • Financing

Financing for your home purchase, or refinancing your existing home can be a complicated process.
    Get help here.

If you've read the closing chapter of Earthship Volume II, you know our stance on banks and most money-lending institutions. We've seen a number of clients waste hours, weeks, even months trying to convince a bank to invest in them. Investing that much effort in yourself and your own saving program can yield much more rewarding results.

We recommend trying smaller, shorter term loans: personal loans, small business loans, and lines of credit if you must borrow money - any OTHER kind of creative financing.

Above all, don't bite off more than you can chew. Build a little with the money you have, move in and start saving on living expenses. Use the money you're not spending on rent to add on as it's possible.

We've never seen it take as long as the 20-30 year mortgage for the Earthship owner to get comfortable.

If you just can't save or wait or sacrifice, go to the bank. A mortgaged Earthship is better than no Earthship at all. But, while getting bank financing for any home is a lot of work, getting financing for an Earthship can seem an almost insurmountable task in locations where the building technique is unfamiliar.
We've asked all our clients to keep us posted on financing possibilities and have recently come up with some great new opportunities.

Banks & Credit Unions with experience lending on earthships..

    Volume II excerpt: financing earthships
Unconventional Housing: Energy Efficient homes offer loan prospects.

Arizona Financial Incentives for solar and wind generated electricity.

Banks provide both construction and long-term loans. However, they often have more difficult underwriting guidelines and more policies regarding owner builders than credit unions and mortgage brokers.

Credit Unions provide competitive long-term loans and in some cases construction loans also. They often provide a construction to permanent loan which reduces the loan fees by combining the loans into a package loan.

Mortgage brokers can usually get very competitive rates for long-term mortgages, however they often don't provide construction loans.

Private financing for owner builders is common for a construction loan because formal lending institutions often restrict such loans to those who are licensed and insured contractors. However, this usually means higher interest rates.

    Earthship Bathroom

Savings/IRA-Savings are an important aspect when building a house. The more money that you have at your disposal the more favorable in the eyes of the bank.

Collateral such as property that you own or equity in your existing home, can be used for a construction loan.

Family/relatives can also be a source construction money...

Another thing to keep in mind is that the cost of building Earthships themselves is likely to go down, not up. This is simple economics: as long as something isn't mass-produced it will be expensive, but the more people become "pioneers" and invest in the concept, the cheaper it will eventually become. The same will probably NOT be true about land.

So my advice to anyone who dreams of an Earthship is: buy your land now, and build the Earthship later if you must. Find some cheap land even if it is far away from you, and hoard it against your future. It won't cost you much per month and you can make up the difference by sacrificing something else. Trust that meanwhile prices of things like solar systems will continue to come down, and new innovations be made, and eventually you'll be able to build that Earthship. Start collecting tires and cans meanwhile. Do what you can.

All of our construction drawings are designed to meet standard building code requirements. Earthship Biotecture cannot guarantee your plans will qualify for a building permit. That is because before granting a permit, building code departments sometimes require changes or additions to architectural plans that have been submitted. Once we mail your final plans to you and you find they require changes for a building permit, we will do them for you at our normal hourly rates.

After you receive your plans and you require modifications, including a redesign of your project or value engineering, Earthship Biotecture reserves the right to charge an additional fee to make these changes. Please note that we mail you your final plans only after you have reviewed them and given us your approval.

Earthships provide security in economically unsecure times.

Earthships cost about the same as a conventional home, but a conventional home does not come with all the electricity and water you will use. A conventional home is bad for the planet, is not strong and uses materials that require a lot of fossil fuels to manufacture and get to your building site.

Earthships can provide you with tax incentives and a higher resale value.

Live FreeThey have virus advertising and virus approaches to marketing and all that. That is a new and big thing compared to what it used to be.

    Well, I got something else.

I think this is how the Earthship concept should be sold or spread, let’s say, like a virus.

I kind of like that concept there. The thing is, the concept involves building this building... how we run the crew, how we make money, how we run around the world doing whatever. Our stain on whatever is around us is what we are. This is way more comprehensive than just a business. A business is not my real motivation. My motivation is to turn this planet into just a most unbelievably beautiful living being which it was before humans came here but have humans participate in that. That is really what I want to do.

Dense mass both collects and stores temperature like a jar holds marbles.

Insulation, however, neither collects nor stores temperature. It simply blocks the passage of temperature from inside to out and visa versa.

We must realize that we, the users of the vessel (the home), are part of the vessel. This is much the same as we, the users of the Earth, are part of the earth. The Earthship is a participant in the prevailing systems of planet earth. It causes no conflict, no stress, no depletion, no trauma to the planet earth.

Just as the human body is a result of the various systems that support it - (circulatory systems, nervous systems, respiratory systems, etc...) so must the Earthship be a product of the systems that support it. In view of this, we have made the Earthship systems both understandable and available to the common everyday human. Systems are generally 25 percent of the construction cost of a home, providing little to no utility bills every month.

    A Tree and its Systems

We are simply adapting our needs to the already existing activities of the planet.

Why pipe water long distances from a centralized community water system, or from an expensive well that needs significant electrical power, depletes aquifers and lowers the water table, when water fall from the sky?

Why have a corporate or political "middle man" between us and our energy needs? our vessel (home) must be designed to sail with the forces that exist beyond human control and exploitation.

An understanding of mechanical systems for most humans is limited to what is within reach of their fingertips. It is understood that when you flip a switch on the wall, a light comes on. when you turn on the faucet, hot water comes out. When you pull the handle on the toilet, it flushes. Little though is given to where the electricity comes from or what kind of nuclear waste was produced to generate it. how many of us even know where the power plant is that supplies our power. Few people ever wonder which water table is depleted to bring them water and what chemicals have been added to it. Where does the sewage go after it is flushed and which rivers and lakes are polluted by it?

    Earthship Systems Plan

Humans need comfortable temperatures, light, electricity, hot water, food, sewage treatment, etc. These necessities are all available within the framework of a certain "rhythm" in the Earthship. The more we are able to align our priorities and needs with the prevailing rhythms of the planet, the easier and less expensive (both in terms of economics and ecology) they will be to obtain.

If our lifestyles can conform more to the patterns of the planet than to our socioeconomic system, we can reduce the stress on both ourselves and the planet. This is easier said than done due to the "reality" and the "gravity" of mortgage payments, utility bills and the generally high cost of eating and living. Most of us have no choice. We have to be places at certain times looking certain ways in order to make the money needed to make those payments. However, many people have built Earthships themselves and ended up with little to no mortgage payment. They also have little or no utility bills and their ability to grow food year-round inside the Earthship has greatly affected what they have to spend on packaged, processed foods.

The condition of our planet tells us we must now begin to take responsibility for what happens beyond the reach of our fingertips. We must begin to reconsider the source of these utilities, our access to them, and how we dispose of the waste produced. The mechanical systems of the Earthship confront these issues directly. We call this direct living. Source, access and destination are all contained within the Earthship, within the reach of our fingertips. There is no mystery involved in Earthship electricity. There is no unknown source of water. There is no magical black hole that sucks up all our sewage. Instead, we work in harmony with the earth to deal with these issues - taking what it has to give us directly and giving back what it wants to receive. With this harmony ringing in our minds we evolve the Earthship Systems. Earthship Biotecture

    Earthship "Build" Opportunities

Earthship “Builds” are opportunities to work side by side with our crew in locations all over the globe. Most builds will take an Earthship from to start to finish. Interns participating in these builds pay a registration fee and are responsible for their own accommodations, food and travel. Lunch is provided. Build Opportunities are posted on the front page of this site as they become available.

    Earthship Intern Program

The Earthship Intern Program is a month long live/work/learn experience at our headquarters in Taos, New Mexico. Participants will live in an Earthship and work up to five days per week on Earthship projects in the Greater World Community.

Interns participating in this program pay a housing fee and are responsible for their own food and transportation. Those who complete the session will earn a certificate to attend an Earthship Seminar for free and may attend Academy classes at a discounted rate.

    Earthship Biotecture Academy

The Earthship Biotecture Academy offers extensive training in Earthship design principles, construction methods and philosophy. Academy classes, labs, tours and hands-on construction techniques are led by Michael Reynolds and a staff of top Earthship builders, electricians, plumbers, plant specialists and educators. We are building an Earthship Army and the Academy offers education for those who are excited to learn and live the Earthship philosophy and help expand it globally. We will be offering 5 Academy sessions in 2014 in Taos, New Mexico.
