Thanks to everyone who helped provide information, connections, advice and donations for the Earthship Biotecture recon visit to Haiti.

As it turned out it was much more than a recon visit... we built a building with the help of forty Haitians from the tent camps - ages four to fifty.

Donate money for this cause now:

$11,199.25 raised by 217 people.
Goal: $74,000
  • We fed them lunch each day for four days and they helped and learned how to build this earthquake resistant and hurricane resistant building made from garbage all within a mile from the build site.
  • We are going back in October to add systems to this building again with their help.
  • We managed to get into the heart of the Haitian people who are living in the tent camps.
  • We found out what they need and we found out that we can help them provide it for themselves.
  • We raised only $7,000 for this trip and it was all used for travel expenses, local accommodations and food, shots, feeding the Haitian build crew and buying materials.
  • There were no wages or pay of any kind for the Earthship team - they went for free.

The images illustrate what happened. There were tears when we left.

Again... thanks to all who helped in any way.

We will go back and do more.

Haiti Construction Overview

The key here is that we are doing a permanent structure,
this is not a temporary thing.

All housing becomes permanent regardless. People live in it until it falls apart anyway even if it was meant to be temporary. This is a permanent structure that takes care of people, that takes very few skills and those are easy to acquire. The local people can replicate these. We do not want people to become dependant on products that we make or any country makes. We want people to be empowered by the ability to create sustenance for themselves, and in doing so, create employment, jobs, a mini economy. An entire method that is independent of corporations, largely independent of oil, independent of politics. Its Putting Housing Back into the Hands of the People.

We are returning in October of 2010 when all of the Earthship Systems will be demonstrated:

- Electricity: From the sun and wind.
- Water: From rain and snow melt, used four times.
- Sewage: Treated on site in botanical planters.
- Heating and Cooling: From the sun and the earth.
- Food: Grow inside and outside.

We are going to Haiti to not only bring the people some technology and demonstrate it, we are going to bring a method of living that works for us here. Its taken us 40 years to develop it, we have a few communities using it. We are doing buildings all over the world using this. So we are trying to take this method of living to Haiti and demonstrate it and evolve it toward the Haitian people on the level at which Haiti needs it, not taking developed world housing and trying to make it work in Haiti.

Updates via images and videos on this project will be updated here, on this webpage: earthship.com/haiti

We are hoping to raise funding for the next phase of this project, to return in October, 2010 to finish the project. If we do not raise the money, we will fund it ourselves.

THE EARTHSHIP BIOTECTURE HAITI RECOVERY EXPEDITION

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake, with an epicentre near the town of Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-PrinceHaiti's capital. The earthquake occurred at 16:53 local time (21:53 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010.[4][5] By 24 January, at least 52aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded.[6] As of 12 February 2010, an estimated three million people were affected by the quake;[7] the Haitian Government reports that between 217,000 and 230,000 people had been identified as dead, an estimated 300,000 injured, and an estimated 1,000,000 homeless. The death toll is expected to rise.[8][9] They also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged.[10]

We down in Haiti in April and from what we saw in all the tent cities and there are sooooooo MANY!!! The land that most of the tent cities are on are privately owned lands. The landowners do not expect to get their land back anytime soon. If you want the names and places and a few contacts that we have already made with really GOOD people please do not hesitate to call. We can get you in contact with camps and the people that can help you get permission.

I just heard at a conference today from a church team who is building in Haiti that the government has forbidden people to use buildings that have a cement roof. It surely looks like your building does. This group completed a school 2 months ago, but because the roof if cement and the floor of the second floor is cement over the first floor, the kids are still meeting outside under a tree. Do you know about this "law"?

There is a bigger exposure to people with the same interests and ideals as yours.

You are doing amazing work. Best of luck.

yeah, totally agree with Ben at #4938 about Kickstarter - it would be brilliant for you guys to experiment with it. there is already a pretty healthy following for any kickstarter project, and it has its own community - some of whom would certainly jump at a chance of supporting you - and it could go viral. really glad to see we're 1/7 there already, nice to see the haiti project break the 10K

Hi, I just returned from Haiti in July 2010. Our mission was to oversee the construction of a nutrition clinic on a six acre lot. My involvement with the trip was to install a one acre sustainable garden and plant 70 fruit trees and 50 shade trees on that lot. We will return in October 2010 to see it completed. If you need any volunteers for your village I would love to be a part of the work crew. There is so much work to be done still, I will continue to pray for the people of Haiti.

Hi, our charitable community is ending a 45-year-history in the DR - at a nutrition clinic that we established. Ted - any chance you could email me about your project? It sounds inspiring! And 'Earthship Michael' - your work gives me hope! Thank you. I'm a Catholic Sister (53) and wonder if there's any way I could assist with either good work in Haiti. maureen@paxgaia.ca

I am part of a non-profit organization and we are working in the small town of Lester, about 5 hours north of PAP. I would love for the next earthship project in October to take place in this town. We are looking to buy land to build a community center. Most people in the community live in shanties. Please e-mail me back if this is a possibility.

You're sustainable houses are just fabulous and the fact that you put your heart into spreading it to people in need is great. I am a hi-rise construction manager and the waste we produce is awful. I would love to use my skills to help make these thing go and help as many people on the way.

Just sent an e-mail out to you guys, but thought it would be wise to post on this wall as well. I don't know if you need more brute force/ manual labour, but I would give anything to be able to go to Haiti with you all and help with this project! I have recently completed a solar installation intensive and will be certified in permaculture design within a few weeks. Please let me know how I can help. dickison.heather@gmail.com

This summer, the Earthship Biotecture crew went to Haiti after the 2010 Earthquake. They built a sustainable shelter as an example to the Haitians so they could recover from the devastation. The Haitians learned how to build shelters from the remains...and now Earthship Biotecture is going back to teach them how to capture fresh water, use solar electricity and treat sewage...

Come support this humanitarian cause from our town of Taos to Port-au-Prince Haiti!!! Shadows will host an evening of fun, food, bands, videos and a slideshow of the expedition. Bands include Kate Mann, Kirry and the Parlor String Band and Shadows late night grooving DJ Michael
