We learned so damn much.

We’d been swimming in a fishbowl with our design challenges which were easily dispatched at the end of the workday chatting over snow cones and rice crispy squares. The Earthship Biotecture folks were unlike any ‘construction crew’ we’ve ever met. They weren’t going to the ‘McJob’ site. They believed in this lifestyle. They themselves lived in an Earthship. Talk about the ultimate mastermind group for this subject.

Our issues circled how to address a limited budget with our big dreams slash unlimited imaginations. We are after all typical artists with ‘Champagne tastes on a Beer budget’ as my dear ol’ Dad used to say. Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, however entering the never never land of publishing does not automatically equal a win fall. We’re broke. How then to finance an Earthship?

Seems that a sizable number of people who want to build an Earthship are in the same boat, ie. kinda broke, but that’s where creativity comes in. We were advised to consider starting small and adding on as funds came available such as a single ‘U’ or perhaps a tire HUT to enable us to live in something while building the main house in increments. If ‘fortune favoured the foolish’ as James Tiberious Kirk would say then we wouldn’t hesitate to take that chunk of change and invite the gang back to B.C. to throw that building up in no time.

Apparently we Canadian volunteers (aka interns) kicked some serious b_tt in that we’d completed by the end of week one what was expected by the end of week two. Not bad indeed. It would be wrong of us to claim all the credit though when in point of fact it was organization that did the heavy lifting. The real reason we got as far as we did had to do with the owners having all the materials, tools and work stations set up before anyone arrived. Also an on site ‘cat’ plus a professional crane operator kept things moving along expediently so as much as we’d like to claim Canuck awesomeness we’ll just have to do so based on our micro brewed beer, B.C. bud and Maple Syrup instead.

To every intern we met we’d like to say “You rock!” and to all the core crew of Earthship Biotecture who braved our approximation of summer weather we’d like to say, “Come back in the winter and we’ll take you ice fishing”. Thank you all for the memories and the tools to build our own house. May peace be on your house.

Samwise and Frodo out.

Not only is this a sustainable, recycled home, but it also embodies Fibonacci’s Golden Ratio!

Made from recycled materials and running on renewable energy, the astonishing buildings known as Earthships offer an extraordinarily green form of domestic living. Perhaps the strangest of them all is the Nautilus Earthship, a design based on the Fibonacci sequence, as seen in the Nautilus sea shell!

In the Fibonacci series, each number is the sum of the two that preceded it. What this means is that when mapped as a grid it forms an endless spiral — a form seen throughout nature, whether in sea shells, sunflower heads or artichoke flowers. Derived from this is the Golden Ratio, employed by artists and architects to achieve aesthetically pleasing compositions, which have included mankind’s greatest works of art.

Offshore Banks are an ideal option for those investors who like to venture into other markets and not stay confined to their home territory. Such offshore banking services enable the investors to enhance their assets in a confidential and secure government, away from the rules and regulations of his home territory. Offshore banking services involve opening up of accounts in offshore areas which offer the investors many benefits like banking secrecy, a tax-free environment, legal protections against overseas civil court actions and many such banking services.

The offshore banking environment is unrestricted, allowing freedom from excessive taxation and freedom from beaurocracy. Offshore banks offer many tax effective ways of handling large amounts of money. It also offers privacy of funds for those who want to keep their amount confidential. Among the services that include effective asset protection and a level of secrecy usually unheard of ‘onshore’, it also enables the investors to gain access to investment products and opportunities that might not be available from any domestic bank.

Which offshore banking service (http://www.worldenergycapital.com) to choose deserves extreme care. An ideal banking service is one that offers stability of jurisdiction, keeps a low profile to avoid unnecessary attention and operates in an area of stable governance. The offshore banks have become so consumer friendly that the offshore account can be easily opened through a phone, an e-mail or even fax.

Hallo,

@indigo1984

Hi Pdubya,

You don't need to connect the tyres. Just put double cartboard in the bottom and fill the with earth and pound them well. This should prevent earth from leaking down.
The wall can go up to 10 rows. Take the big sized tyres for the bottom rows and try to use the same size each row.

Good luck with the experiment,

Thank-you for showing us your Earthship adventure. From the minute I saw MR's concept I was enthralled. My brothers and I dream of a collection of homes built in this style as a family retirement community.

Your project is of great interest to us. Your efforts help prove the concept's viability and blaze a trail for others to follow.

Q: What modifications would you make for a West Coast design? Can the Earthship handle abundance of rain and less sun than the arid climate of Kamloops, Kelowna and even 100 Mile House?

How would a Vancouver Island Earthship handle the moisture?

Best of luck this winter!

Oops! I don't think I included my e-mail. Quick question! Is it possible to build a planter at the back of a U room with sky lights and still keep the temperature stable and not become too hot? We're discussing where the planter needs to go and that would be the best location due to where the water is going. thanks, Carl

Hi! My wife and I are building our own earthship. I had a quick question. Is is possible to build a planter at the back of a U room with skylights for the plants and not heat up the room to an unbearable temperature? We're discussing where to put the planter and it would work best for us at the back due to where everything is.

** This thread discusses the content article: Earthship Nature Center (/americas-pennsylvania/earthship-nature-center) **

The Silver Lake Nature Center in Bristol, Pennsylvania, will build an Earthship!

The Earthship is Coming! Bristol, PA, USA

Brace yourself for one of the hottest building designs ever – a carbon zero home! Imagine a structure that is built with recycled products, heats and cools itself, gathers its own water, recycles its own waste, and produces food. All this is possible with an Earthship. The Nature Center will be constructing its own Earthship based on designs by architect Michael Reynolds also known as the ‘Garbage Warrior’. He’s been building these structures for 40 years. So why haven’t we heard of them before? Well for one, they look different and people are slow to change. For another, they are different and haven’t exactly matched up with existing codes and regulations. This is changing as the need to reduce the planet’s carbon foot print becomes more critical. Many architects and engineers are becoming very familiar with new designs and materials and one day we may see more of these buildings. For now the only place in this part of the country where you can see one will be at Silver Lake Nature Center. For more information, go to www.silverlakenaturecenter.org.
