TOPIC: running out of water

running out of water 1 Year, 1 Month ago
Greeting from west texas. We (my family & I) live in an area I like to call O-desert tx, aka Odessa, tx. We actually live outside the city limits in what's known locally as "West Odessa". A lot of people out here are running out of water. The wells are drying up. A little over 2 years ago, I was told that we only had 2 years worth of water left, if we didn't waste any on watering the yard. We manage to conserve our water usage enough to make it last over 2 years, but time's running out. We'd love to buy some land & build an earthship, but we can't sell this place due to the lack of water.

Does anyone know if it's possible to retrofit a rainwater collection system on a mobile home, or how much it might cost? Our mobile home is around 1000 sq ft. I'm not sure what the roof is made of. It looks metallic, but it leaks, so we're going to have to repair it or replace it anyway. According to a local weather website, we get around 13 inches of rain a year. Would that collect enough water for a family of 5, that has quite a few pets? Does the system come with an ultraviolet purification lamp? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. If it's possible, and we succeed in it, then it could show people out here a way to help themselves fix their water shortage problem as well.

Wolfish love & bright blessings,

SheWolf, I don't know why there has been no responses...???

The Earhships in Taos are self sufficient w/ 8 inches of rainfall a year. The answer to your question is "Yes" your mobile home can be retrofitted to capture rainwater.

Re: the expense, it all depends on storage size, level of filtration desired.

Good luck out in West Texas...
