Garbage Warrior Review, ordered from NetFlix

I thought Michael Reynolds, the architect behind the earthships, was going to be a cranky, anti-establishment, radical, given the tone of the earthship books, so was pleasantly surprised to see, in this film, that he is an old softie and humanitarian who started out as a traditionally trained architect. Garbage Warrior is also available on iTunes.

The earthship is here, in the hinterlands of Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, India

Kodaikanal: A novel idea is taking shape in the hinterlands of Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, even as you are reading this. Alex Leeor, 35, from Brighton, UK, has arranged about 800 tyres and a few truckloads of mud on a remote, difficult-to-access hillock tucked away in Karuna Farms at Prakaspuram village, some 15km from the main town. Leeor is building what is set to be mainland India's first Earthship (the other being at the Andaman and Nicobar islands), a fully self-sufficient passive-solar home, made of natural and recycled materials.

=== Testimonials ===

"For the cost of a normal two-bedroom home in suburbia, Earthship owners are enjoying the green life in a style usually reserved for science-fiction."

"Earthships are everywhere! Or I wished...then we would be well on our way to passing a much better planet to our kids!"

"Go Michael! I'm spreading the word and you... Keep up all that fun!"

"I want to study earthships.
I believe they can save the world."

"It's my dream to own an earthship in the UK. Maybe one day!"

"I was there, sow the film and since that time I´m keen fan of Earthships, Mike and the surrounding spirit... Greetings from Czech Republic"

"Earthships are a blueprint for our future living habits." - The Independent, the UK's leading Daily Newspaper.

". . . the Earthship is the epitome of sustainable design and construction. No part of sustainable living has been ignored in this ingenious building."

"This is a form of currency that is very powerful and very logical and I am seeing it work. I can show people how to survive no matter what happens to the economy. They would not only survive, they would be fat and happy! This is fun, this is fun."
- Michael Reynolds, Earthship Biotecture

Dear Mayor,
Hi my name is Glenn. I am writing you in regards to the city of Union and where you stand on the subject of sustainable housing. I have been researching different methods of sustainable housing for 8 years and have found the most sensible method is called Earthship Biotecture. The term "Earthship" was derived from a comparison of efficiency, to a ship sailing the open seas, self contained. - click to read more...

Earthship Systems: Food Production

A fundamental concept of Earthships is that gray water from the sink or tub is recyled and purified by feeding into an indoor planter before being used to flush the toilet. This creates an environment in which plants are not only asthetic and contributing to the heath of our environment, but are also highly functional and play a direct role in the maintenance of the home. Having plants that produce food within this environment makes sense and takes sustainable and independent living to another level. - click to read more...

GARBAGE WARRIOR RECEIVES GRAND PRIX AT PRAGUE’S EKOFILM 2009

JURY NAMES MICHAEL REYNOLDS WORLD’S MOST SIGNIFICANT “WASTE ARCHITECT”

The acclaimed film, Garbage Warrior, by Oliver Hodge (pictured), was awarded the Main Prize of Ekofilm and also the Viewers’ Prize at the 35th annual EKOFILM Festival held earlier this month in Prague, Czech Republic. The six-person international jury said the extraordinarily fascinating film captured the essence of American architect Michael Reynolds, who could easily be nicknamed the most “significant waste architect in the world.” The film follows the efforts of Reynolds and his crew, who designs and builds inexpensive, fully functional residences out of throw-a-ways, primarily tires, during world-wide economic challenge and material consumption. The structures are completely off the power grid, yet are as conventional as the client/owner dictates. Reynolds is seen fight against local bureaucracy and laws of his home state of New Mexico. The documentary follows the architect’s tireless attempts to get legal approval for his alternative building methods. - click to read more...

Earthship Crew Spotlight: Mike Balassone

Two years ago, Mike Balassone was living in semi-retirement in Alabama. Originally from Ohio, he ended up in the deep South after a varied career which included two decades in the Navy. Today, he owns an Earthship and works full time for Earthship Biotecture building E-ships for clients from New Mexico to Jamaica. We sat down for an interview a few weeks ago and Mike filled in the blanks for me.

Q. How did someone who used to work with nuclear weapons on aircraft carriers end up in Taos?
A. "I wanted to move to New Mexico. Taos was just a funny sounding towdn to me. I got here and toured four earthships in four hours. Three months later, I owned one. Also, the lack of tropical storms at 7,000 feet was a huge factor.” - click to read more...

Earthship Biotecture for Patagonia

'Bariloche, a beautiful town nestled in the scenic mountains of Patagonia, is one of Argentina's most popular tourist destinations. Yet hidden behind this suave exterior, Bariloche hides a darker side. The town dump, concealed from of the city center and all it's extravagance, is home to a community of people struggling to stay alive in the harsh mountain conditions. Earthship Biotecture is sending a crew of six Earthship Biotects to Argentina to help these people learn a sustainable way of living and providing for themselves. In order to make this a reality, we are looking for $150,000usd, and we ask you to help us. - click to read more...

EVE (Earthship Village Ecologies) receives support from IDEA of South Korea

The EVE project is an experimental testing site for sustainable housing. When completed, it will provide housing for 25 people--the world’s first high-density off-the-grid village. Residents will live and work in the village, and share a greenhouse connector that will also allow them to grow their own food.
Mike Reynolds’ newest brainchild will illustrate in a practical way that Earthships can be affordable and available to many people, as well as providing a comfortable and earth-Sfriendly solution for housing in high-density areas around the globe. - click to read more...
