Can Your House Withstand 12,000 Visitors a Year?

In the spirit of “if you build it, they will come,” we can’t help but brag just a little: Over the course of the fifteen years our visitor center in Taos, New Mexico has been open, we have had just over 95,000 people walk through it!

And 2009 was a banner year: more than 12,000 people came through our doors, a 58% increase over 2008.

earthship educational facilityThis is all the more remarkable given the state of the economy and the fact we are located pretty far off the beaten path.

Visitors in 2009 hailed from every state, every Canadian province, and 19 countries. The only continent not represented was Antarctica.

We are looking forward to another great year, especially since our new Earthship Educational Facility and Visitor Center will open this spring--with its gallery, two screening rooms, and double greenhouse, we will be able to accommodate more people and larger group tours.

When we move into the new facility, our current visitor center won’t be retired completely. It will eventually become part of E.V.E., Earthship Village Ecologies--an off-the-grid totally self-sustainable village that will house 25 people.

But who knows? Maybe someday the first Earthship Visitor Center in the world will become a historical landmark!
