Well kids here's how it is... We have a 650 acre sustainable community that we fought hard for ten years to establish. The reason we had to fight was that we wanted no infrastructure or conventional utilities to be in this community. We wanted it green, sustainable, autonomous, and free. That upset everyone in authority so we were in for it. We kept fighting and finally got it.

We have maybe the only 650 acre development on the planet that is allowed to have no infrastructure or utilities. We sold this idea because the Earthship building does everything for itself.

Michael ReynoldsNow... within this 650 acres we have the EVE project (read about it at earthship.com/eve).
This project is two acres within the 650 acres that is called a “testing site” for living methods - we wrote and got passed a law that substantiates this. It is under construction and will house 25 people - providing all (absolutely all) their living needs in an experimental economic circumstance that promises to show the world another way of living. We are building this project now - sometimes fast, sometimes slow. We have to build two new 15,000 gallon water towers to provide fire protection for this project. They will of course be built with recycled automobile tires.

Also within this 650 acres is the gravel pit reclamation project where we are filling an old gravel pit with Earthships to reclaim it. (read about it on line at earthship.com).

We are also running four seminars a year out of the new Earthship Education Facility funded by Governor Bill Richardson. Interns will be invited to this seminar for free.

We are also building a few new model Earthships constantly and often have around the county projects for real clients.

We have an intern dormitory/castle that is a failed high end Earthship where the owner completely got out of control and made something we now have to retrofit. Interns live there and help retrofit there. This is a great education in retrofit which is the real number one job of everyone in the world. I say this because there are billions of existing buildings out there that we cannot just tear down - we have to learn how to retrofit them.

We, of course, have our offices there with all kinds of global activities and business going on from book publishing to disaster relief projects to just trying to stay alive.

The Earthship Academy is also going on here. It costs more and actually has schooling.
The difference between the intern program and the academy is schooling, i.e. classes.
The intern program is just you being here and helping us do what we do. Believe me that is an education. We offer it for those who cannot afford the price and/or do not want the regimen of the school program; as there is a tuition and a schedule for the Earthship Academy.

So... all in all this is not a boring situation and has the potential to be the time of your life.
You are here in the Greater World Earthship Community where all of this is happening.
That is the deal... you are here... and invited/expected to help in anyway you can and learn. You work along side of Earthship builders and people whose life is nothing but Earthships. I am one of them. This is the life.

The intern program costs $50 to $150 per week for your accommodations in the intern castle/dormitory. Price is set by the type of room you select. You feed yourself. You spend your time working with us. We never know what it is going to take to keep this operation going. You could be working on a brand new Earthship or you could be trying to retrofit an existing Earthship or you could be trying to grow food... there is no way of knowing what will be going on. One thing for sure though... something will be going on.

Most of the time I provide a talk for you once a month on what we are doing and why we are doing it. Our Education Director, Kirsten Jacobsen will provide an orientation/history talk in the beginning of your stay. Other than that we cannot say. Earthship activities will be happening that are influencing the world. Come and be part of it.
