Beating out such high profile websites as inhabitat.com, ecogeek.com, greenbuilding.com, dwell.com and epa.gov, the Earthship website received high marks and keeps good company in the top 10.

The 100 most prevalent sites were chosen through multiple search strings and internet browsing. Most of the sites chosen for the initial 100 appear in the first 5 pages of search results for multiple search strings. Sites referenced by reputable sources were also chosen for the list. To see a copy of the full 100 sites please go (here).

Each site was visited and explored create an initial score based on the following criteria and scoring system.

  • Amount of related information – 30 points
  • Quality of related information – 30 points
  • Helpfulness to buyer/builder/owner/contractor - 20 points
  • Level of detail – 10 points
  • Up-to-date information – 10 points
  • Ease of navigation – 5 points
  • Site aesthetics – 5 points

During the review process, there was a keen awareness that it is very difficult to compare sites of varied content, such as a site geared toward green building practices compared to a commerce site selling green products. Efforts were made to judge sites on their own merits, but did acknowledge that in scoring sites, there had to be a singular definition for each scoring category. For this reason, some sites that can be extremely helpful, such as green commerce sites failed to attain high standing upon our final review.

Following the initial scoring, 25 sites were chosen for further review and scrutiny. This phase incorporated a more subjective review of the sites. Attention was paid to how the viewer would use the information, how each site would appeal to both the home owner and the home professional. Sites that were linked directly or indirectly through corporate structures were brought together and viewed more positively for the synergy of the two sites.

It is understood that every site has something to offer and we hope that this list helps you to find the resources you are looking for as you create, purchase or renovate your next green home.

The Earthship website at www.earthship.com received the following marks:

  • Amount of related information – 27 out of 30 points
