We must realize that we, the users of the vessel (the home), are part of the vessel. This is much the same as we, the users of the Earth, are part of the earth. The Earthship is a participant in the prevailing systems of planet earth. It causes no conflict, no stress, no depletion, no trauma to the planet earth.

After years of careful consideration, I have concluded that there is no other way to build. I need a home for me and my 2 children. I live in the Ozark Mountains and am needing to know if there is one plan over the other, better suited to my region. We have a little bit of seismic activity, is this of concern? Thank-you in advance, Patricia

Patricia, Earthships are incredibly strong, and yet they do have a little 'give.' Certainly, more than concrete and steel!

I can tell you this: in the event of an earthquake, or any natural disaster, I would want my grandchildren in an Earthship--I think it is the safest structure they could be in, under any circumstance.

I'm interested in knowing how safe these constructions are from hurricane force winds, heavy flooding, fires, break-ins and possible ballistics compared to that of common housing structures.

I second Psyker's question, especially with respect to fires, break-ins and ballistics. I dig the idea, and the whole concept of sustainability as freedom, but I think that to be a true shelter, a home should be practically defensible.

Tarvarno:

Earthships are shown to hold up better to fire threats than conventional buildings. Similarly, ballistics would depend on point of impact. The walls would be nothing to worry about, but unless you reinforced the structure with Plexiglas I wouldn't be confident in a strong storm.
