Tips on making your Earthship reservation easier!

Staying in an Earthship is a specialty experience!

For most people it is an inspiring and memorable stay.
Some people were expecting a traditional "Hotel" and that's not us!

The following is a summary of important points related to renting an Earthship in the Greater World Earthship Community. Please read this BEFORE you book an Earthship for nightly rental so we have no misunderstandings related to your reservation. A waiver will be waiting for you to sign upon arrival stating that you have read and understand these points. Your attention is appreciated!

1. About Earthships:
All three Earthships that we offer for nightly rental are located just outside of Taos, New Mexico in a solar home subdivision called the Greater World Earthship Community.

The buildings are named for easy reference. (Click here for photos and rates.) These completely off-the-grid homes vary in size, the amount of people they can accommodate and price per night. All electricity is generated by solar power and all water is collected from rain and snow. Please be conscious of your power and water usage during your stay. The heating and cooling system of these homes is based solely upon the thermal mass quality of the buildings.

The Studio and Phoenix have fireplaces that can be used in winter for ambiance. The Corner Cottage does not.

2. About our location:
We are in a remote location outside of a remote town! Please be aware that it takes three hours to drive to Taos from the Albuquerque airport and another half hour to get through Taos to our location. It is imperative that you plan for this so that your trip will fall within the parameters of your scheduled check in time (see below).

3. About check in time:
If you have rented an Earthship you need to be escorted to the building in the Community, shown how to get in and use the power, e tc. We accomplish this by having you pick a time within 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. when you would like to be met at the Visitor Center. (Located at the Greater World Community entrance.)

A staff member will have been assigned to come away from their regular work to meet you at that prearranged time and show you the way. As cell phone service is spotty on the rolling terrain of the Community, it is nearly impossible to call them and change your check-in time. If you do arrive early,  you are welcome to peruse the Visitor Center and watch the videos while you wait. If you are unable to arrive by 4 p.m.  the Visitor Center will be closed and no will be here to check you in.
(If you are having trouble making your check-in time, please keep these numbers with you while traveling-  during weekdays: (575)751-0462, or on weekends: (800)841-9249.

4. About our refund policy:
No refunds are given for the nightly rentals. Your reservation is secured by full payment in advance of your stay. If, once you have booked a rental and received your e-mail confirmation your plans change - or you are unable to make your reservation for any reason - let us know before your scheduled arrival and you will be issued a credit for the full amount paid. That credit is non-expiring and transferable within the company. You could use it for a stay another time, or purchase books & videos, or apply towards attending a seminar.

5. About check out:
To check out you do not need to go back to the Visitor Center. Check out is at 11 a.m. If your rental has a key please just leave it in the door for the cleaning staff.

6. Specific to the Phoenix Earthship:

  • This building is not located in Phoenix, AZ.
  • This building does not allow pets.
  • This building has a large second greenhouse attached to the front of the building where there is food being grown, live birds and a small fish pond.

Our staff member, Heather,  is on duty at the Phoenix from Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  watering and maintaining the plants and animals. You may or may not see her. (Questions welcome.) This will not affect your living space unless in the rare event the back of the building must be accessed for maintenance. If this occurs your permission will be obtained to walk through the kitchen.

RE: The pond: If you have children you must be ready to supervise their activities in that greenhouse space. In addition to the hazard of water and children, putting hands or foreign objects in the pond kills fish. Digging or playing in the planters disturbs a living part of the house that has taken years to establish. Please respect this delicate biosphere.

The Phoenix building is quite large. If you do not need the entire three bedroom, two bath home, one side of the building with the West bedroom/bathroom can be closed off and either side rented separately as they have their own entrances. This reduces the rate and guests from both sides are still able to experience the outer greenhouse.
The kitchen is NOT shared. Please ask for more explanation on the layout of the Phoenix.
There are no land line phones in any of the rentals or on the community. (Everyone uses satellite or cell)

Please see the Earthship Rentals webpage for more information and photos of all three Earthships offered for nightly rental in the Greater World Earthship Community.

7. A note on GPS:
GPS directions can be unreliable. The best plan is to direct yourself to Taos, NM. Then find Hwy. 64 heading west out of town. After seven miles on  Hwy. 64 you will cross the Gorge Bridge. (A major landmark here, spanning the Rio Grande.) Click here for maps. If you continue on Hwy. 64 for another 1.5 miles you will see Earthships on your right, the first one has a sign on the highway that says "Earthship Visitor Center". This is where you need to go to be checked in. Use the front door of the first Earthship on your left as you enter the driveway.

8. A note about the Community:
Your are welcome to stroll along the community roads if you wish but do not approach the homes. They are private. The only Earthship available for viewing at this time is the Visitor Center.

9. Waiver:
The waiver will say that you understand and have read these points. You will be asked to sign it upon arrival and before your check in.
