Topic: How are Earthships Relevant to Philadelphia?
Earthships are one of the key factors to help Philadelphia become the leading city in the world for sustainable living. An example for the world to follow.
Earthships represent total independence from anything. From electrical grids going down, from water not working, from giant storms, from freezing weather. Earthships will withstand any natural disaster when conventional architecture and infrastructure is destroyed. The people will still have power, water, sewage and warmth when giant storms hit.
Here is a basic step-by-step process so that you can take the water from your kitchen or bathroom sink and direct it into an adjacent planter bed to create a grey water planter system. This way you are using the water a second time and it is not wasted but is guided directly to the plants’ root systems.
We began by redirecting the plumbing under the sink so that the water flow would exit outwards into where the planter is located. We then measured the distance from the outlet pipe to the base of the planter space in order to size the reception box that will be added.

Here’s the latest update from the Rumble in the Jungle. You’ll see our workforce, 7 Mayan Machines 18-61 yo. (Raul, Dick, Sessario, Benito, Darius, Rudolfo, Barfilio), a earthship apprentice (Nick; MN), 2 WWOOFers (Kayla & Alex; NY www.wwoof.com) and the clients (Alisa & Richard). Working steady, and live for the 10:30 a.m. fresh coconut break. Great interest, brewing from international ex-pats.
Earthships can be fully above ground, wrapped with straw bales or 4″ rigid insulation (depends on climate) and finished with conventional facing. If the climate is temperate then the configuration of the layout of the rooms in an earthship can be altered.

WHY IT IS GOING TO BE DIFFICULT FOR HUMANITY TO EVOLVE SIGNIFICANTLY ENOUGH TO SURVIVE A CHANGING PLANET
Bergen Architectural School – BAS – Bergen, Norway – December 7, 2008
We (Earthship Biotecture) were asked to help establish a force to retro fit the old nine story concrete agricultural grain silo building, home of the architectural school in Bergen, Norway. Our objectives were as follows…
Here in the early part of the twenty first century we find ourselves trying to react appropriately to the changing climate of the earth. We attribute part of this changing climate to the activities of humans, specifically relating to the CO2 emissions from these human activities. We have also observed that these changes are happening faster than we expected from previous observations and that between 30% and 50% of the CO2 emissions are directly related to and coming from buildings. There is, in fact, at this point, a certain urgency relative to just how and when we react.

Do you adapt a design to suit the location or suburb or is it purely for new open parcels of stand alone land?
We have been doing this for over 40 years and have experienced most every situation when the goal is providing shelter that is absolutely sustainable. We have learned a lot from the world, from nature and from humanity and its methods of business. Therefore we have created standard designs over the decades and now offer the Global Model Earthship. This model is a standard design, all figured out and is the result of over 40 years of research and development. This model will work in any climate on the planet. That is something we must offer, as a business and as part of our research.
