New Zealand Earthship Update

memeChristchurch has been through a hard time, do doubt. Its been over 2 years since the worst quake, which threw the city into chaos and its residents into turmoil.

Its now March 2013 and a lot of the roads are still terrible, the whole central city is still closed down, there are blocks that used to be hubs that are gravel car parks and thousands of houses are red stickered and stand empty.

Mike Reynolds took an interest in the Christchurch situation and came to visit us in NZ for 6 days in mid March. Mike spoke at 3 public seminars to Christchurch residents, as well as meeting with the Christchurch City Council, doing a talk to architecture students, a retrofit talk at a farm homestead and 2 media interviews. Mike also lead the 3 day practical workshop with 35 participants of an Earthship build on the Hills above Christchurch. Here is what happened.

Earthship Malawi, Africa – Join Us!

This October, Earthship Biotecture will be joined by a team of student soldiers to build an Earthship flower design community center in Malawi, Africa.  We are working together with a local NGO, Empower Malawi, to gather people and funds to spread the word and build two rooms (petals) over the course of ten days.  The dates of this project are October 7th-16th, 2013.

The project, Kapita Earthship Community Centre, is to become a sustainable development epicenter for 38 villages and over 5,000 rural people in South East Mzimba district in Malawi. The Kapita Earthship Community Centre is to house a community bank, a mini library, a dispensary, offices and a food bank.

Earthship Academy Update: New Global Model Earthship

Global Model @ HQ being built by the Spring Academy cont.

The Academy session is already in its final few weeks and the one bedroom global model is looking more like a house every day.  The interior framing is almost completed with proper footings in place for door frames.  Electrical boxes are being installed, grey water bed has been filled and packing out of the tire wall continues.  This past week, the vigas were delivered and took all students to get them up the berm and in place.  Here are a few pictures of this process and the progress of the building.
