The main entrance takes you in through a side atrium which is part of the exterior greenhouse. Here you see some of the recycled materials used to make an earthship: Bottles, Tires, cans, and the distinctive colored tiles which are scrap iron from old appliances and other items that would otherwise be headed for a landfill.
One such system is the double greenhouse design that runs the entire south wall of the home. This innovative design provides superior climate control and comfort to a single wall of glass because of its insulating properties - minimizing solar gain in the summer, while maximizing gain and minimizing heat loss during cooler times of the year. By opening or closing doors and vents between the greenhouse and living area, the homeowner can better control the temperature and comfort. One added benefit this design provides is a wonderful indoor garden space used for growing ornamental or food producing plants using the home's graywater system.
This view shows the great room. The kitchen sits along the wall ahead, the graywater biocell is on the left at the far left side of the picture.. A loft perches above the corner to the right provide extra office nook or storage space. To give room for the loft, the floor is recessed here. Flagstone covers the high-traffic areas of the floor while a beautiful polished adobe finish covers the rest. Other New Mexico touches include the large viga ceiling and adobe plastered walls.
The kitchen features elegant and beautiful craftsmanship with hand made cabinets, concrete countertops inlaid with colored glass, and a custom tile backsplash. A gas stove sits in the center with a large double sink to the left.
The loft sits over the corner entrance to the rest of the house. At this time no ladder exists for access, but adding one would not be difficult. Presently a small refrigerator rests below it. A larger DC refrigerator could easily fit in this space. Here you also see the beautiful viga ceilings.
The hallway with flagstone floors connecting the bedrooms and bathroom to the rest of the house sits at the back of the home. The doors on the left lead to closets and mechanical areas.
Beautiful tile work, a freeform tub, and pedestal sink give the bathroom elegance. Draped windows bring in light yet preserve privacy.
This view of the bathroom wall shows as unique freeform bottle art panel. The door to the left features a beautiful stained glass panel. Both of these features transfer light to the laundry area and hall.
While the first bedroom is the smaller of the two, it is still very spacious. Doors and operable windows open to the greenhouse area to allow temperature control by opening and closing them to according to what is most comfortable.
This view looking back towards the door shows the bottle art in the wall, the polished adobe floor, adobe walls, and viga ceiling.
The spacious master bedroom occupies the west end of the house. In addition to the door and windows to the greenhouse, bottle art also brings in light. The graywater planters in the bedrooms provide greenery as well as assist in the home's water recycling systems.
This picture shows the west entrance of the home. A decorative light tower to the left illuminates at night when turned on and shows the many colors of the recycled bottles used in its construction. A solar hot water heater provides all of the homes hot water unless cloudy weather requires the inline on demand propane water heater to supplement it. The backup fires automatically and does not require effort to start it when needed. The door under the water heater leads to the greenhouse area and the rest of the house.
The home also features a large walled yard as shown in this view from inside the greenhouse area. This provides an excellent area for gardening, keeping pets, setting up a children's playground, or just enjoying the peaceful mountain views in the privacy of this sheltered space. Local Information
