Robyn is an artist documenting the collapse of America’s economy with a focus on those who are rebuilding life within it. I had only been in contact with Robyn through email when she pulled in to the driveway. She arrived in her pseudo housing/diesel jetta in which she has been not only traveling through the country in, but also using as her developing studio. She showed me a box full of portraits of people who have managed to surpass the decaying infrastructure with a grassroots spirit.

She has photographed bike farms, urban farms, free schools, art and theatre collectives, tent cities, squats as well as off-grid houses. I took Robyn through the intern house, where I live with eager minds who have come from all over the world to learn how to build Earthships. Every month we invite a new group of people to come and work in exchange for education and knowledge on how to build Earthships themselves.

I also took Robyn to a few of the job sites where she photographed the crew and interns at work. She uses an antique large format view camera made in 1896. The one of a kind positive image is exposed onto tin, as opposed to a negative on film. Her dark room trunk and cooler containing developer and collodion provide the developing studio for this process. A rather bulky and outdated process enables her to portray her grassroots theme in a beautiful way. I was inspired and delighted to spend the day with her.
