The Phoenix Earthship is the most exotic nightly rental experience we offer.  This home’s jungle greenhouse creates its own microclimate in the high mountain desert and is completely off-the-grid, exquisitely detailed and outfitted with modern amenities. The outer greenhouse features towering banana trees, grape vines, birds, turtles and a fish pond with fountain.  The inner living spaces are cozy and quiet.  The Phoenix has been welcoming guests from all over the world for almost ten years and was featured in 2014 as one of Lonely Planet’s Top Ten Eco-Stays.

Important Information on Arrival Times and Payments:

Keep in mind that our arrival times fall between the hours of 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. and check out is at 11a.m., so plan your travel accordingly. For instance, if you will be flying into Albuquerque allow about four hours between landing and arriving at our Visitors Center. (Our community is only a 15 minute drive from Taos). This will give you ample time to deal with luggage issues, renting a car, traffic and/or any delays between Albuquerque and Taos. It's a wee bit of a trek but WELL worth it. You'll have a blast!

Payment in full is expected to reserve your dates. If you need to cancel for some reason, our policy is that if you notify us at least 24 hours in advance you may have a standing credit for rescheduling anytime in the future as there are no refunds. You may also transfer your credit to a friend or use the credit to purchase materials from our Earthship Store. Unfortunately, we cannot accept dogs in this flourishing microclimate.

We loved staying in the Phoenix so much, we don't want to leave!
Love the concept of building w/recycled material and also ling off the grid. Our stay here proves that both are possible with seemingly few hardships or sacrifices - just common sense.
I'm going to miss all the animals especially the chickens! All of them except that one red rooster - I've go my eye on you!

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to live completely off the grid, then this is your chance. In the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains near Taos, New Mexico, lies a small collection of buildings that seem equal parts Gaudí masterpiece and Dr Seuss whimsy. These are the so-called Earthships (earthship.com): radically designed buildings made from recycled materials and boasting impeccable green credentials. Solar panels generate electricity around the house, while a rain- and snow-collecting cistern provides all the water for the house. There's even a greenhouse.

Yet you won't have to sacrifice comfort staying here. These rentals come with wi-fi and smart TVs, and have a bohemian-chic interior that will appeal to design-minded folk.

“What I loved most about this place - aside from the surreal experience of staying inside an adobe-like building actually made of old tires and glass bottles - was the incredibly peaceful setting. You're in a magical part of the Southwest; there's nothing as peaceful as watching the sunset, and seeing the night sky slowly fill up with stars.” - Regis St. Louis

Cash for Trash on National Geographic

Cash for Trash on National Geographic In more ways than we know, our lives are built on trash. If you stacked up all the world's old junkyard tires, they would reach to the moon and back. So what can we do with them all? How about building houses.  Invented by architect Michael Reynolds of Taos, New Mexico, Earthships are custom-built, off-the-grid houses built from recycled materials, like recycled bottles (pictured), aluminum cans, used tires,...Read More

Taos & The Greater World Community from go-van.com By Captn_Julz • Photos: Guillaume Beaudoin We’re producing too much trash on a daily basis, and we don’t recycle enough.
