New Global Earthship Underway at Greater World
Gorgeous sunny weather prevailed on Day 2 of construction on a brand new Global Model Earthship at the Greater World Earthship Community.

The building will be a two bedroom, one bathroom home with an arched tunnel entry-way, similar to the Crockett, Texas Earthship and the Todos Santos, Mexico Earthship.

This house will have a larger living room and larger master bedroom and will be about 1700 square feet. It sits on a 1.5 acre lot just to the south of the Euro Earthship and is not far from the Corner Cottage.

The site has a lot of sagebrush and is currently being hand-excavated by the crew. The tires are being pounded "from the ground up" meaning there is no earth cliff or large initial dig.

The cooling tubes and the thermal wrap are being installed as the tire work goes up. There were two birthday boys on the site today, Seth and Demian Larsen, identical twins and 18 year Earthship vets. Happy Birthday, fellas!

Mar 29 2010 18:55:12 We bought the glass from a local glass company. It is tempered glass. Double paned and a total of 1" thick.

Mar 29 2010 20:23:01 What kind of jobs are available in the Greater World? I'm wondering if the only way to survive there is to build Earthships and sell them.

Wow you guys are all about the money. Your not trying to help people at all. OK, I was not going to reply to this, but I changed my mind. I have only be studying the Earthship philosophy for a few years now. I have researched a bunch of other building styles, maybe not as much as this but I have looked at many of them. I beg you to find any other alternative building team that has the direction and focus of Mr Reynolds and his team. I doubt you will find anyone else teaching to the masses at no charge to the student short of their on living expenses. I have been to the Greater World Community and I was fortunate enough to be an intern at the Miles City build site. These guys and gals ROCK. Many are doing this at the expense of their own bank account because they care about teaching what they are committed to, to others like us. Sure, it cost for consultation and drawings and WOM's n such. The end result is a place you can feel warm and comfortable living in and know that you have done your part to minimize your own carbon footprint. If after reading all the Earthship books, viewing all the videos and reading all the blogs you still feel the same then this is probably not meant for you anyway. I'm gonna go plant some flowers now. was it OK that I said all that? |

Apr 11 2010 10:40:03 Well said Greenman_KC
I have stayed In a couple of Earthships and met Mike and will be building/buying an Earthship in the future. The work being done is important to the survival of the human race and also to educate the misinformed people who have no concept of sustainability. |

Lot's of beautiful glass creating a thermal buffer zone to keep the inner sanctum comfortable year around. Wish I had thought of it. |

Apr 13 2010 11:13:00 I'm a bit confused by the design of this earthship , i thought the max distance you should allow in a U should be 18' otherwise the amount of thermal mass heat stored would be less affective and this U is 60' more than 3 times the recommended size?

Here's my take. The 18' limitation was due to the horizontal, east-west, support structure (ie vigas or other support structure from U to U). In the Global Design, the beams run North-South, so the depth has this 18' limitation. |

Re: New Global Earthship Underway at Greater World
Apr 13 2010 21:14:13 I don't think they're all about the money, you have to understand they have to earn a living like everyone else. They have volunteered time and effort in many places, Haiti is the most recent. I agree a set of plans is expensive, It's hard for me to spend $8000 on a set of plans when I could use that money elsewhere, like my solar setup, cisterns, roof, etc. I'm sure they would make things much easier for me in the long run, I'm waiting for the new book and will hopefully get enough info out of it to build mine properly. When I get the book and look it over I'll know, I might end up just having to hold off on my build, until I can save up for awhile and purchase the plans. anyway I understand they can't do everything for free all the time, a price break on the plans would be nice but I'm not gonna beg for one. I'm sure the plans are well worth what Michael charges, I myself just can't afford them at this time.

I just found out today, that my Building Permit was going to cost about $7000. |

Apr 22 2010 02:23:02 I heard about these structures a little while back, and I think they're brilliant creations. I'm not a big environmentalist or anything, I would just love to live in a fully sustainable home and not have to depend on corporate America for all my needs( water, electricity, sewage, food etc). It is still great to see that people take the initiative and make homes like these, and hopefully in the near future everyone will hop on the wagon. I know I would certainly love to live in a place like this, and maybe it will shut Al Gore up.
